LUXURY SMARTWATCHES: OUTSMARTING MILLENIALS?

Not so long ago I witnessed millenials predicting the end of the watch. "Why would we need a watch at all? We got our phones." Well, looks like these smart phones are not any longer considered smart enough. Otherwise it's hard to understand the size of the #smartwatch market. Let's be honest - most smartphones are useless, there hasn't been any real killer app yet that truly leverages the medium. (Some people would argue that mechanical watches are useless too). So it's all about feeling modern, cool and trendy - about feeling connected with the future rather than the past. But that is actually an important value proposition for the next generation. And probably the biggest disruption of all: The future is about to take the place of the past. A crucial change for luxury brands. The importance of heritage fades with respect to a vision. Rather than standing apart in exclusiveness its all about feeling socially connected and "li(n)ked". Your next innovation is more important than your past success. Ironically with netflix & co. we abondonned the dependence on time of TV, to re-discover dependence again with snapchat & co. My bet: the phone will go. The gold old watch has won. For now. And Eyewear calls.
